Two Zurrieq men were yesterday fined Lm200 each for trying to steal a car and assaulting its owner a few days later at a police station.

Francois Cumbo and Carmelo Camilleri, both 21, pleaded guilty to trying to steal Raymond Debono's car on December 31, 2001, and assaulting Debono and police officers at the St Julians police station on January 10, 2002.

Cumbo was charged with threatening Debono and Camilleri was charged with the possession of a knife without a licence.

Police Inspector Martin Sammut prosecuted.

Dr Franco Debono appeared for the men.
