Two men fined €2,000 each for smoking on flight and threatening cabin crew

Both men admitted to the charges

Two men have been fined €2,000 each after one admitted to smoking on a Ryanair flight while the other admitted to threatening a member of the crew.

Serbian nationals Andrija Klašnja and Andrija Stevanovic, both 23, were arraigned in court Sunday, accused of recklessly or negligently causing an aircraft to endanger persons or property in breach of the Air Navigation Act.

They were also accused of breaching public peace.

Klašnja was accused of smoking on the aircraft, while Stevanovic was accused of behaving in a threatening, abusive, insulting or disorderly manner towards a member of the crew.

The flight was an inbound flight to Malta, originating from Niš Airport in Serbia.

The pair admitted to the charges.

The court took into account the men’s apology to the crew and the captain for their unruly behaviour.

The court held that a suitable punishment in this case would be towards the minimum and therefore fined them €2,000 each to be paid in instalments.

Magistrate Victor Axiak presided over the court.

Police inspector Christian Abela prosecuted.

Legal aid lawyer Silvan Pulis assisted the accused.
