Two new jellyfish were recorded in Sliema and Qalet Marku, bringing the total of known species in Maltese waters to more than 20.

A disc-shaped jellyfish, Discomedusa lobata, which can reach a maximum width of 15cm, was spotted at Sliema.

According to marine biologist Alan Deidun, the disc jellyfish is a stinging type and is considered to occur only occasionally in the Mediterranean.

The second, known as Neotima lucullana, is also not very common in the Mediterranean. The species is presumed to be a stinging one too.
