Two women have been appointed director generals in the two directorates within the new education system.

Micheline Sciberras was appointed director general of the Directorate for Educational Services while Grace Grima will be heading the Directorate for Quality and Standards in Education.

Following a recently introduced law, the directorates replaced the Education Division that was set up in 1993.

The Directorate for Educational Services will ensure that students and teachers in state schools have the necessary resources and services and will collaborate with Church and independent schools.

It will consist of three departments: One for student services, another for human resources, and one for building, maintenance and equipment of state schools.

Dr Grima's directorate will be responsible for establishing standards and monitoring the quality of teaching and services in all schools.

It will consist of a department for the curriculum and e-learning and another for the assurance of quality education.
