Archbishop Joseph Mercieca has established the pastoral zones of Iklin and Santa Maria in Birkirkara as new parishes.

The Curia said Iklin will be a parish as from March 19 and will be dedicated to the Sacred Family. Its parish priest will be Fr Karm Aquilina.

Santa Maria will be a parish as from May 8 and will be dedicated to the Ascension (Santa Maria Mtellgha s-Sema). Its parish priest will be Fr Emmanuel Camilleri.

The two new parishes will bring the number of parishes in Malta up to 70. The last pastoral zones to become parishes were those of Mtarfa, Pembroke and Qawra. These became parishes on December 8.
