A patient at Mount Carmel Hospital was yesterday charged with assaulting and injuring two nurses while a second patient was charged with complicity.
Carmel Camilleri, 30, and Paul Micallef, 31, pleaded guilty to their involvement in the assault of nurses Mary Azzopardi and Joseph Incorvajja at the hospital on Thursday.
Camilleri was given an 18-month jail term suspended for four years after he pleaded guilty to assaulting and seriously injuring Azzopardi, slightly injuring Incorvajja and causing less than Lm10 damage at the hospital.
Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera moved on to pass judgment after hearing Dr David Cassar explain that despite suffering from a mental health condition Camilleri was aware of his actions at the time of the assault.
Micallef pleaded guilty to complicity with Camilleri and to assaulting Incorvajja. His case was put off to determine his mental state at the time of the assault.
Police Inspectors Dennis Theuma and Kevin Farrugia prosecuted.
Dr Richard Sladden assisted Camilleri and Micallef.
