A Maltese man and woman could be jailed for up to 20 years if they are found guilty of circulating counterfeit US dollars by a Tunisian court in a trial which starts on Friday.
The man and woman had gone on holiday last February and were reported to the police by a shop owner after they allegedly paid for goods with counterfeit money.
The couple were traced and arrested and a search of their hotel room allegedly yielded around $40,000 in counterfeit notes.
The two, who are being kept in separate prisons, have already faced compilation proceedings and it was decided that there was enough evidence for them to be charged before a jury.
Dr Anglu Farrugia and Dr Chris Soler are assisting the accused and their families.
