The European U-19 championships got underway yesterday at the Dolmen Hotel with the opening matches from the group stage.

The U-19 tournament has attracted the participation of 56 players with the Malta Billiards and Snooker Association being represented by five players.

Matthew Calleja had mixed fortunes in Group A when he beat Switzerland's Alexander Ursenbacher 3-1 but then lost to Ireland's David Cassidy 3-0.

Chris Peplow lost both his Group C matches against Duane Jones, of Wales, and Northern Ireland's Declan Brennan 3-0.

Shaun Sultana suffered two defeats in Group E against Irish players Ryh Clark (0-3) and Sean Conway (0-3). Aaron Busuttil beat Iceland's Sigurour Kristjannson, 3-0 in Group F while Wayne Pace was beaten by Dale Lawrence, of Wales 3-0.

Meanwhile, the team championship resumes today with the final matches from the qualifying stage.
