The Union Haddiema Maghqudin has accused the Malta Union of Teachers of falling into the trap set by the General Workers’ Union.
In a statement, the UHM said that to redeem itself, the MUT today issued a statement saying it had also taken part in a protest organised by UHM, back in 1997.
That protest, the UHM said, had not been backed by any political party unlike those held on Sunday and yesterday.
MUT president John Bencini, the UHM said, knew that these demonstrations had the Labour Party behind them. So it was useless to condemn the uncivil acts and the disparaging speeches against the Nationalist government and its leaders.
The UHM said it always believed unions should keep away from politics. So when it took part in a protest organised by unions against the way the government wanted to introduce the new tariffs in 2008 it had insisted it was willing to take part on condition that political parties were not represented.
