British police shot a man dead yesterday after being called to reports of a van being driven the wrong way down a main road near Hull in northern England.

Humberside police said armed officers were sent to the A63 road at Welton, East Yorkshire, at around 6.20 a.m. after being alerted that the vehicle was heading the wrong way down the eastbound carriageway.

Media reports said the man had got out of his van and was wielding a sword. Attempts were made to resuscitate the man but he was declared dead at the scene at 7.30 a.m.
