The University of Malta Academic Staff Association (UMASA) was mildly surprised to read a report on its reaction to the National Commission for Higher Education (NCHE). UMASA did not make the document secret but neither was it circulated to the press and no member of the press ever contacted any of the officials of the association.

Nevertheless, UMASA is pleased to note the ministry's assurances (December 21) regarding university autonomy and looks forward to seeing the association's suggestions, which were discussed and approved by an extraordinary general meeting, incorporated into the effective terms of reference for the NCHE. This should clear any misunderstanding arising from the White Paper.

UMASA, as primarily a professional organisation, reaffirms its commitment to promote the progress of the university and its relevance in Malta and beyond.

The association is, therefore, determined to offer advice to and collaborate with whoever holds these ideals high.
