An unconscious Libyan man, with serious wounds to his face, was taken to hospital in the early hours yesterday after a woman found him lying in the road in St Julians.

The police are investigating the cause of the 33-year-old man’s injuries although sources said the man was “probably involved in a fight”.

The police said the victim was taken to Mater Dei Hospital at about 3.30 a.m. and found to be in critical condition. He had been spotted by a woman in Dragonara Road. She called an ambulance and the man was rushed to hospital.

Initially, he could not be identified because he did not have any documents. However, eventually a friend turned up in hospital, with his passport, and shed light on the victim’s identity.

Magistrate Anthony Vella launched an inquiry into the incident.
