I refer to the reply sent by an old colleague of mine, Tony Barbaro Sant, senior manager communications, Maltapost plc, to my two previous letters.

I appreciate his honest apology. But I would like to ask one thing. Does his reply mean that whenever we mail something containing a cheque it has to be registered? In that case, I must thank the Almighty that the other unregistered cheques posted to the Joint Office have arrived safely.

My former colleague should not suggest a new form of tariff. We are burdened enough.

It is simply a question of somebody failing me; whether it was the Joint Office or the post office is immaterial. But Mr Barbaro Sant should acknowledge that something mailed in Malta destination Malta but is not delivered as is expected is not something Maltapost can boast about.

Meantime, to the credit of Maltapost I must say that a tape recording of the Malta Song for Europe sent to a relative of mine in Australia arrived in under a week and, surprisingly, it was not registered. So let bygones be bygones and I really appreciate the fact that Maltapost had the decency to apologise. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the Joint Office.

Perhaps the next time we meet in Valletta, Mr Barbaro Sant can buy me a cup of tea to compensate for the Lm2 I had to fork out to have the cheque stopped.
