University's FEMA strikes deal with Forvis Mazars

Faculty of Economics, Management and Accountancy to collaborate with audit and tax firm

The Faculty of Economics, Management and Accountancy (FEMA), via its Department of Accountancy, has entered into a strategic collaboration with Forvis Mazars, a global leader in audit, tax and advisory services.

The two entities have recently formalised their partnership  at  an event at the Council Room within the Msida Campus, hosted by University of Malta rector Alfred J. Vella.

The collaboration agreement  is aimed at strengthening their working relationship while jointly contributing to the training and development of future professional accountants.

In today’s rapidly evolving global economy, the accountancy profession faces unprecedented challenges and opportunities. Advances in technology, increasing regulatory complexity and a growing emphasis on sustainability and ethical governance require professionals who are not only technically proficient but also adaptable and forward-thinking.

Alan Craig, director at Forvis Mazars in Malta, said: “At Forvis Mazars, we recognise that the future of the accountancy profession depends on the talent and skills of the next generation. By partnering with the Faculty of Economics, Management and Accountancy, we are not only sharing our expertise but also investing in the development of professionals who will drive innovation, uphold the highest ethical standards and navigate the increasingly complex financial landscape.

“Equipped with the right knowledge and practical experience, these young professionals will play a critical role in maintaining trust, transparency, and resilience within the industry. This collaboration is essential to ensure the profession continues to evolve and meet the demands of the market.”

With a presence in over 100 countries, Forvis Mazars combines industry expertise with a commitment to integrity and forward-thinking solutions. Their services span financial audit, tax consultancy, risk management, business advisory and outsourcing, helping organisations navigate complex regulatory environments and improve their performance. Forvis Mazars is also recognised for fostering a culture of continuous learning and ethical practice, making them a trusted partner in the sector.

Members from Forvis Mazars’ Business Advisory Department in Malta will, in fact, be delivering lectures to UM’s Accountancy students enrolled in the study unit ‘ACC 5217 – Forensic Accounting’, for three hours per week throughout a whole semester. This direct engagement with industry professionals offers students invaluable real-world insights, exposing them to practical case studies, investigative techniques and current industry standards, thereby enriching their academic experience and better preparing them for the demands of the profession.

UM rector Vella welcomed the partnership, saying: “The Faculty of Economics, Management and Accountancy’s close engagement with leading firms like Forvis Mazars in Malta not only enhances the relevance of our academic programmes but also equips students with the practical skills, insights, and professional mindset needed to thrive in competitive environments. These partnerships play a vital role in improving student employability and ensuring our graduates are industry-ready.”

Th Forvis Mazars and FEMA partnership took shape thanks to the initiative and leadership of Lauren Ellul, head of the Department of Accountancy.

“We are proud to be working alongside Forvis Mazars in Malta, a firm that represents excellence in the accountancy profession. This collaboration reflects our commitment to providing students with more than just academic knowledge − it gives them the opportunity to engage with practitioners, understand real-world challenges and develop the practical competencies that employers value. It is through initiatives like these that we can truly prepare our students to make a meaningful impact in their careers from the outset,” she said.
