The University of Malta gets good grades in teaching and learning but has been marked as “weak” in research and knowledge transfer.

In an EU-financed report ranking 850 universities worldwide on their performance in a number of areas, the Msida campus scored B grades in teaching and learning, particularly on Bachelor and Masters graduation rates and graduating on time.

However, the university scores badly when it comes to research.

The Maltese university was only awarded A grades in international orientation and income from regional sources, particularly due to the fact that many foreign students are choosing Malta for their courses.

The study, called U-Multirank, was conducted by an independent consortium of institutions led by Germany’s Centre for Higher Education and the Centre for Higher Education Policy Studies in the Netherlands.

Overall, US universities were still considered to be the best in the world by the researchers. Harvard, Yale and MIT, received almost full marks. Oxford and London in the United Kingdom, Milan’s Bocconi and Germany’s University of Munich, closely match their US counterparts in standards.
