Unlicensed driver granted bail after Pembroke crash injures woman
Accused denied raft of charges including cocaine possession
A 22-year-old Luqa man was granted bail after pleading not guilty to driving without a licence when he was involved in a collision that left a woman with slight injuries.
Mattheas Borg appeared before Magistrate Ingrid Bianco on Friday morning where he faced a raft of charges following a collision that took place on Thursday on St Andrew’s Road in Pembroke.
The man was accused of driving without a licence or insurance cover, driving in a reckless, dangerous and negligent manner, causing slight injuries to a woman and damaging her car.
He was also accused of being in possession of cocaine after the police found 0.3g in his pocket.
Borg faced other traffic related charges including driving while his licence is revoked and allowing a third party to drive the vehicle when the insurance did not cover them.
He was also charged with breaching two sets of bail conditions and recidivism.
The man denied the charges.
A collision was reported on Thursday night, involving the vehicle being driven by Borg, in which his girlfriend was a passenger, and a second vehicle, whose driver sustained slight injuries.
Defence lawyer Jacob Magri requested bail, arguing that the versions of the eyewitnesses had been taken by the police and were already preserved in the records of the case, among other arguments.
The prosecution objected to the request.
After hearing the submissions, the court upheld the request and granted the man bail against several conditions including a €3,000 deposit. A curfew was also imposed and he was ordered to sign the bail book every day.
Magistrate Ingrid Bianco presided.
Police inspector Nathan Bugeja prosecuted while lawyers Arthur Azzopardi and Jacob Magri appeared for the accused.
