Unsafe children’s bicycle recalled
The bicycle was recalled over weak handlebars and poor brakes
The Malta Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority (MCCAA) has declared a model of children’s bicycle as unsafe over weak handlebars and insufficient brakes and recalled it from the market.
In a statement, the authority said the Sky Everest Venere 12 (Art. No. 2197-PP), from manufacturer batch number D210634, had been recalled following testing.
“Testing revealed that the handlebar breaks due to low mechanical strength causing loss of control and a potential fall resulting in an injury. Amongst other non-compliances, the bicycle failed the front and rear braking performance”, the statement read.
The test failures meant the bicycle does not comply with general European product safety regulations and standards set for children’s bicycles.
Consumers who have bought the bicycle should stop using it and return it to the retailer it was bought.
Retailers are obliged to replace the bike with an alternative safe model of the same type and value or refund the customer in full, the MCCAA said.
The tests were undertaken as part of an EU Commission project which also saw the testing of other children's products including “slime toys” and electrical products.
Queries about the recalled product should be directed to the Market Surveillance Directorate at marketsurveillance@mccaa.org.mt.
Enquiries about remedies available to purchasers of the product should be directed to the Office for Consumer Affairs on consumer.rights@mccaa.org.mt.
