Mr Joe Zammit's letter (The Sunday Times, January 7) is very much to the point. However he did not go into the question of whether all extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion are in fact worthy of this task. I do not want to generalise, but I know of some ministers of Holy Communion whose personal behaviour leaves much to be desired, and certainly makes them unfit for this role, yet they are allowed to continue in their ministry.

Such behaviour ranges from looking down on fellow employees and being rude and even threatening or bullying them, to sexual harassment of female staff, and abusive language.

But come Sunday you have to receive Holy Communion from their very hands and say Amen to their pronouncing the words "The Body of Christ".

Normally, extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion are carefully selected by the Curia from exemplary members of the community. But it seems that, in a few cases at least, the selection process has not been thorough enough.
