Three foreign swimmers were this afternoon assisted by four off duty volunteer lifeguards of the Emergency Response and Rescue Corps at Ramla Bay in Gozo after they were dragged by currents.
The ERRC said the incident happened at 2.30pm.
It said the swimmers were dragged towards the easterly area of the bay, which could be due to whirlpools. One of the lifeguards was an off duty policeman, another an off duty Civil Protection officer.
The lifeguards, who were surfing, made their way out to the three men and dragged them ashore, where they gave them first aid. One required urgent assistance as he showed signs of fatigue.
All were in their twenties.
The lifeguarding service at Ramla Bay was terminated in the last week of September.
