Useful communication

The word "communication" is normally lacking from the dictionaries of many of those who are responsible for one aspect or other of our country's life. It is unfortunate that many a time lack of communication leaves people in the dark about many issues.

The word "communication" is normally lacking from the dictionaries of many of those who are responsible for one aspect or other of our country's life. It is unfortunate that many a time lack of communication leaves people in the dark about many issues. This leads to suspicion and to rumours being spread around.

Certainly one of those who believes in communication is the Director of Civil Protection, Peter Cordina during the recent storms.

He was always ready to make himself available to radio and television not only to warn people not to use certain flooded areas but also to explain why some roads, although not flooded, had to be kept closed to traffic. I am certain Mr Cordina's openness saved lives and prevented more injuries.

Other heads of department and ministries should follow Mr Cordina's example. I have never understood why they have been shackled by having to go through the Department of Information. This takes time and information might then be old hat.

Each ministry has its own communications coordinator and he or she should be given the right to issue any information directly to the media and to the public.

Local councils, parastatal bodies and the like have got to follow Mr Cordina's lead as this will ensure a greater trust from the people.
