In order to make the changeover to the euro as smooth as possible, the National Euro Changeover Committee has made the following suggestions:

• Members of the public should start making use of the euro from day one.

• If you have any money at home you want to exchange into euro, you don't have to do so in the first week. Leave the first week for the exchange of money you need for your daily needs.

• No one can refuse payment in Maltese lira until the end of January.

• If you pay in lira, if possible provide the exact change or nearest possible.

• If you want to ensure you are given the correct change in euros, carry a cash converter with you.

• Do not shop around in order to get rid of the old currency. All the banks will be open again tomorrow to exchange the old currency. You can withdraw euros from the ATMs.

• If possible pay by cheque or by credit card to make things easier for you and for others.
