The amphibious transport dock ship, the USS Ponce (LPD-15), will be visiting Malta again in the coming days, the US Embassy said.
The ship's commanding officer is Commander W. Jacob. The USS Ponce has a complement of 24 officers and 396 enlisted personnel.
The USS Ponce is the first US ship to be named after the city of Ponce, Puerto Rico, which in turn is named in honour of the Spanish explorer, Juan Ponce de Leon who discovered the state of Florida and served as the first Governor of Puerto Rico.
In keeping with tradition, during the ship's stay, crew members will be carrying out voluntary work at a local charitable institution.
