Valletta formally enshrined as capital as constitutional changes take effect

Culture minister hails 'moment of national unity'

Amendments to the constitution enshrining Valletta as Malta’s national capital came into force on Thursday after being unanimously approved by Parliament.

The amendments also established December 27 as the day dedicated to the Maltese National Anthem, reflecting the day it was first performed in 1922.

“Today marks another beautiful moment in the unique history of this city, Valletta — baroque and majestic — and another moment of national unity, with the Maltese National Anthem now having a dedicated day. These two initiatives continue to celebrate what brings us together as one united people,” Culture Minister Owen Bonnici said.

The provision regarding Valletta as the Capital City of Malta has also been entrenched, meaning that if Parliament wishes to amend this provision in the future, the consent of at least two-thirds of the House of Representatives will be required.
