The Mare Blu Cup will be up for grabs when Premier League rivals Valletta and Hamrun Spartans meet in a friendly next week.

The choice of Valletta and Hamrun to contest this pre-season match was an easy one for the sponsors as these two teams are close to the hearts of the proprietors of Mare Blu Tuna Farm Limited who are also the chief sponsors of the Citizens.

Company director Giovanni Cappitta is a vice-president of Valletta FC while his younger brother Massimo is attached to Hamrun Spartans.

The two directors of Mare Blu and officials from the two clubs were present for the launch of the Mare Blu Cup along with Gilbert Agius, the captain of Valletta FC, and Hamrun Spartans midfielder Ryan Fenech.

The Mare Blu Cup, which the organisers hope will become an annual fixture, will take place next Friday at the Victor Tedesco Stadium, starting at 7.30 p.m.

Paul Spiteri and Gejtu Debattista, officials of Valletta and Hamrun Spartans respectively, are confident that the Mare Blu Cup will draw a big crowd to the Tedesco Stadium due to the sporting rivalry between the clubs which dates back to the eighties.
