One of Valletta's 'modern' landmarks, the Wembley Store, was formally reopened this evening after refurbishment.

The 12-month project has taken the store back to the charm it had when it was opened in 1924. The store was originally opened by Emanuel Gauci, the grandfather of the current owners Chris and Noel Gauci. His inspiration came from the British Empire Exhibition held that year in Wembley at the site of the Wembley Stadium. The exhibition brought together products from all over the British Empire. The Wembley Store brought to Malta the best foods that industry had to offer at the time.

The store was partly demolished during aerial bombing in the Second World War - which also demolished the Opera House across the street.

Business continued without interruption, however, and the store was subsequently rebuilt.

The latest lease of life sees an increase in floor space, with better use being made of the old vaulted cellar, which will become a wine cellar. Specialty food stuffs will be offered in new space on the first floor.
