Valletta's Savoy building earmarked for hotel conversion

Developers want to add a fourth floor, rooftop pool and wellness facilities

The Savoy building in Valletta is set to be transformed once again, this time into a 60-room hotel with a rooftop pool and wellness facilities.

The post-war building located on Republic Street corner with St John’s Street, once housed a popular cinema in the 1950s and 1960s, and was later used as a shopping arcade and business centre with a number of offices. It currently houses a supermarket outlet on the ground floor.

An application (PA4213/26) proposes alterations to the existing roof to allow for the construction of a fourth floor to include an open terrace, breakfast area and pool.

The application outlines alterations at lower ground floor to create a hotel lobby and lobby bar as well as the re-organisation of the back of house to create integrated servicing areas. The plan will also shift the existing substation within the building.

Other amenities are planned to include an indoor pool with wellness facilities and a dedicated ancillary conference area.

The proposal includes the demolition of structures on the existing third floor to allow for a “better stepped transitioning massing” of the front façade along the third and fourth floor levels.

Detailed site plans show the hotel will have around 60 rooms, making it one of the larger tourist accommodation within the capital. The Embassy hotel is currently the largest hotel in Valletta with 81 rooms but a new hotel, the Ruby, is expected to open later this year on Strait Street with 88 rooms.

The application was filed by Central Business Centres plc which operates the Central Business Centre in St Julian’s.
