It is with sadness that I have come to hear of the death of a dear member of the community of our town of Victoria, here in Gozo. When I was strolling up Republic Street last Saturday evening, January 17, I noticed traffic in front of the post office; little did I imagine that a couple of hours before, a parishioner whom I knew very well, Rose Mifsud of Victoria, had fallen to the ground and died on the spot, perhaps before the fall itself. She was accompanied by one of her two sons.
Mrs Mifsud was a respectable person and all those who knew her had words of praise for her. She worked as a midwife in the maternity ward of the Gozo General Hospital. Friends of hers told me that when, at work, she had some time for herself, she used to invite the other members of staff to recite the Holy Rosary together.
She was the mother of two sons and the only daughter of her parents. The news of her death shocked the entire community. I have to admit that to me she looked more as if she belonged to a religious community than anything else; the way she dressed and the way she talked, behaved and expressed herself was truly uplifting to me and this is how I shall always remember her.
When I was ordained to the priesthood she gave me, together with a gift, a lovely letter full of words of encouragement and spiritual exhortations which I will cherish more dearly from now onwards.
Goodbye, dear Rose, and please intercede for us from above. May you rest in peace!
