Malta international wrestler Abraham Vassallo crowned what probably can be considered as the best ever year for the University club member by again claiming the Wrestler of the Year award for the fourth consecutive time. The award is sponsored by British Airways.
After placing fourth in the Grand Prix Sicilia and at the Termine Imeresi International Tournament, Vassallo defeated national Italian champion Dario Arfè while competing in the Sassari International Tournament in Sardegna. During 2002 as well, he beat Belgian Ben Danoir in the Madrid Grand Prix in Spain.
Vassallo topped these fine performances by overcoming the national champions of Kenya and Gambia to finish second in his pool during last summer's Commonwealth Games in Manchester. He was also very close to reaching the final stages and a bronze medal in his category during that big event. In the end, he had to settle for sixth place in the 84kg class.
Vassallo, the national champion as an individual and for his team, also had a fine showing during the recently-held Championships for Small Nations in Malta. He placed second in the qualifying group but was eliminated in the semi-finals.
The presentation of the Wrestler of the Year award was held during a social evening to mark the Malta Amateur Wrestling Federation's 33rd anniversary. On the same occasion, young Jason Zammit and George Vassallo were awarded after coming second and third respectively in the Wrestler of the Year contest. Federation president Simon A. Bonello distributed the prizes.
