A vibrant and diverse array of watercolour and oil paintings, wooden sculptures and ceramic works currently line the foyer of the APS Bank Centre in Birkirkara, as part of the bank’s commitment to support art and culture.
This is the second exhibition in a three-year project that aims to bring together the talent of 12 Maltese artists.
Curated by Louis Laganà, this year’s exhibition features four artists specialising in different expressive artistic media.
Self-taught sculptor Raymond Azzopardi presents six wood carvings centred on the theme of dancing. His images of figures seem to be symbols of specific notions of Western ideals, as well as being elements of fantasy created to show the interplay between past and the present, dreams and reality.
In his series of paintings, Charles Cassar works on sheets of wood with embossed, thick paint mixed with other materials to achieve a three-dimensional appearance. The core subject is the mythical and phantasmagorical representation of the world of animals, with the artist using animals as a metaphor for the Self.
Artist Anna Grima presents a series of vibrant and abstract paintings, inspired by the images of prehistoric Malta, the cycle of nature, ritual and symbolism and ancient spirituality.
Valerio Schembri’s ceramic collection of works is the result of his fascination with the intellectual writings of Iain Pears and Umberto Eco. The idea of different versions of the same event and interconnected stories is significant of the ceramist’s starting point for these works. The development of this concept is strongly narrated through six abstract ceramic sculptures.
The exhibition is open until December 6.
