Prof. Victor Griffiths has been presented with the award of Honorary Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in recognition of his work in promoting relations between the UK and Malta, especially in medicine, culture and education.
The award was presented by British High Commissioner Vincent Fean, on behalf of Queen Elizabeth, last Saturday in the presence of Prof. Griffiths' wife Mary, family and friends, and Health Minister Louis Deguara.
Prof. Griffiths was a founder member of the British Cultural Association in 1979 and became chairman in 1988.
He continues to support English teaching in Malta's schools through his "Speak your mind" debates with sixth formers.
He is a professor of surgery and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1945. He worked in British hospitals until 1947, returning to Malta as a consultant surgeon. He was the last local civilian consultant surgeon to the Royal Navy in Malta.
Prof. Griffiths and Mary have a son, William, and a daughter, Margaret.
