The sieges of 1565 and 1940-43 were commemorated at Independence Square, Victoria, last Tuesday.

The programme started with the reading of Ġużè Delia’s poem It-VIII Ta’ Settembru by Anna Ellis. University student Francesco Pio Attard of Victoria then delivered a speech.

Gozo Minister Giovanna Deb­ono laid a wreath at the foot of Christ the King monument.

The Armed Forces of Malta and the Police Band took part.

Meanwhile, religious and cultural events were held in Xagħra. Vicar General Giovanni Gauci concelebrated Mass with the collegiate chapter and clergy, followed by the singing of the Te Deum.

A remembrance ceremony was then held at Victory Square. After a short speech by Xagħra mayor Joseph Cordina, Daniela Sultana delivered a commemorative speech. Re-enactments of the entry of Grand Master de Valette and a World War Two air-raid were held.
