A group of some 60 people late this evening gathered at Joanne Garden, near Dom Mintoff's residence, in what was developing into a vigil for the former prime minister, who died earlier today at his residence.

A few people were praying and saying the rosary. Many chatted quietly. Some had tears in their eyes.

Two policemen stood guard at the gate of the residence.

Those inside included Mr Mintoff's two daughters, his grandchildren and his brother Fr  Dionysius Mintoff OFM.

They were joined for some time by former MP Wenzu Mintoff, former minister Karmenu Vella and long-time associates Sammy Meilaq and Anthony Valvo.

Tarxien Mayor Paul Farrugia said he last saw Mr Mintoff some four months ago, when he called to advise the council on the storage of drinking water.
