We have just returned home to rain soaked Yorkshire after a wonderful two weeks' stay in your beautiful island. This time we stayed in a St Julians hotel rather than the Qawra area and the new choice was the right one.

The highlight of our visit was the beautiful feast of St Julians and an amusing incident at one of your charming pubs. I am referring to the City of London Bar in Balluta area.

As we walked along the promenade towards Spinola Bay, we noticed a commotion outside this bar and out of curiosity we crossed the street intending to have a drink at this place. We were told by the lady at the door that this was a private function, the 90th anniversary of the pub, and only invited guests were allowed in.

As we turned away in disappointment the pub licensee must have overheard our short conversation and he approached us and said we could come in and join the fun as if we were invited. He even escorted us to the bar and ordered a drink for us together with a plate of food.

We were amazed at the hospitality of the Maltese, especially Mr Borg. It was very late when we left the pub after having such a wonderful time meeting the Maltese and the British residents. Well done Mr Borg and once again congratulations on the pub's 90th anniversary.
