The national volleyball league got under way at the Cottonera Sports Complex last weekend after a short break during the festive season. In the ladies league, Paola Hibs Candy won in straight sets against X-Sel while Flyers beat Playvolley Reds 3-0. In the men's league, Aloysians managed to beat their close rivals Marsascala in a five set thriller.

A one minute silence period was observed before each match to mourn the vice-president of the Malta Volleyball Association, Mr Charles Sciberras who passed away a few days earlier. The association wishes to pass its condolences to Mr Sciberras' family and friends.

The match between Paola Hibs Candy and second placed X-Sel did not live up to expectations. The game was marred by a number of unforced errors from both sides especially during the first two sets. X-Sel coach Claudio Coppini had Catherine Attard and Daniela Bonnici missing but included Sandra Bonnici in the starting line up. Both teams were level for most of the time during the first set with Hibs eventually winning 25-20. The second set and third set were more in Hibs' favour as they managed to win 25-20 and 25-18 . Hibs now occupy the top spot with six wins out of as many matches.

The second game in the ladies league was played between Flyers and Playvolley Reds. Both teams started off very well during the first set and Playvolley Reds were able to keep up with the Flyers gameplay as they managed to level a balanced set at 28-28. However, a more experienced Flyers were determined not to commit any false starts and won the set 31-29. One could see a demoralised Playvolley side during the second set as Flyers easily won this 25-12. Louise Spiteri of Flyers played consistently well with Lindsay Cordina being selected to play in the libero position. Playvolley tried hard to re-open the match but this was not to be as Flyers won the third and final set 25-18.

In the men's league, Aloysians ousted Marsascala (picture) in a five set thriller. Marsascala started off on a high with Michael Magro and Ruben Vella performing well. The southenders won the first set 25-21. Aloysians performed better during the second set with good attacks by Alan Gauci and Ian Wright and these helped them win the second set 27-25. The third set went to Marsascala as these gained a 2-1 lead with Steve Grech consistent in his attacks from position 3. It was Aloysians however that emerged as winners by winning the fourth and fifth sets 25-23 and 15-12.
