Voluntary groups, trade unions to have government property rent revised down

Organisations that already pay less than the revised amounts will continue paying at the more advantageous rate

Voluntary organisations and trade unions that operate from government property will have their rent revised in a bid to make it more affordable.

Lands Minister Owen Bonnici said on Wednesday that the discounted rent reflects the government's efforts to support organisations that make a valuable contribution to Maltese society.

The scheme is open to organisations without pending arrears and which are registered with the authority as tenants of title holders of a government property.

Through this scheme:

Properties with an area ranging from 0m² to 150m² will be subject to a revised lower rate of €1.50 per square metre, with a maximum annual cap of €200.

Properties with an area from 151m² to 1,500m² will be subject to a revised lower rate of €1 per square metre, with a maximum annual cap of €750, and the rent cannot fall below €200.

Properties with an area of 1,501m² or more will be subject to a revised rate of €0.50 per square metre, with a maximum annual cap of €2,000, and the rent cannot fall below €750.

Organisations that already pay less than the revised amounts will continue paying at the more advantageous rate.
