There is no country in any corner of the European continent (including Andorra, San Marino or Monaco, at that!) that does not have over three parties and more in the national Parliament.

In Malta, the British had devised a system in 1921 to ensure that the vote could be transferred across parties, so that people could vote for individuals of any political creed whom they think could be ideal as parliamentarians.

Over the past 42 years, the PN and the MLP have ensured that the single transferable vote system be distorted in such a way that people are discouraged from voting for third parties.

Why? Simple: So that these two parties can exercise exclusive control over anything that happens in our country. For the PN and MLP it is necessary to have members of Parliament who can be controlled by the mother party. Therefore, apart from the valid MPs, better to also have incompetent MPs that can be controlled by the parties than competent parliamentarians with a free thinking mind.

Alternattiva Demokratika is offering a unique possibility to the Maltese electorate to break this nearly half century-old mould: With 2,500 first count votes in any district, you can elect an AD candidate and finally promote Malta to the first division of Europe, with real pluralism as opposed to the usual predictable MLP and PN dualism.
