Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi said this morning that a vote for the PN next Saturday would be a vote for "stability, certainty, tranquility and normality."
In speeches at Vittoriosa and on the PN radio, Dr Gonzi said the differences between the PN and the MLP were as sharp as day from night, and while the PN was proud of its proposals and what it had achieved, the MLP was trying to make the people forget its 22 months in government, and its 10 years in opposition.
For this was the Labour party, with the same team, which five, not 50, years ago, had argued strongly that Malta should stay out of the EU and it was now saying it would seek fresh talks with the EU on the accession package.
The MLP under Dr Sant had frozen Malta's EU application and made a disaster of public finances. In opposition, it had proposed a delay of euro adoption, it was against low cost airlines and wanted to devalue the then lira.
Dr Gonzi said his government had not been perfect, and much still remained to be done, but an objective analysis clearly showed that Malta was making considerable progress. It had made a success of EU membership, as evidenced by robust economic growth which had translated into more jobs and more money in people's pockets. This was the momentum which the PN wanted to carry forward, and that was why is was proposing further tax cuts.
In contrast, the MLP was proposing a repeater class and a reduction of the fuel surcharge which would encourage waste, Dr Gonzi said.
