The decision to turn Ix-Xaghra l-Hamra into a nature park has been dismissed by the MLP as a vote-catching exercise.

This is a bit rich coming from a party whose leader is reported to have said that electoral proposals should be formulated only "after calculating whether the proposal will win us more votes or lose us votes" (It-Torca, March 19, 1989). He has also famously stated that he would agree with any vote-catching proposal "even if it came from the devil himself" (It-Torca, June 17, 1990), a concept confirmed more recently with his well-publicised willingness to sign a (metaphorical) pact with the devil should this help to win an election.
