Wales swept aside Scotland with a record 46-22 victory yesterday to remain on course for their first Six Nations grand slam in 27 years.

Wales had won only once on their last nine visits to Murrayfield but secured yesterday's success with a devastating five-try blast in the first half.

Tries for flanker Ryan Jones, wingers Rhys and Shane Williams and two for full-back Kevin Morgan, all converted by Stephen Jones, gave Wales a stunning 38-3 halftime lead.

Rhys Williams got the sixth Wales try early in the second half but Scotland steadied and hit back well with three tries by centre Andy Craig, debutant winger Rory Lamont and fullback Chris Paterson.

Wales's previous record score in 109 games against Scotland was 35 points in 1972 while their previous record margin of victory was 23 points.

Wales can secure their ninth grand slam against Ireland in Cardiff next Saturday but, such is their points difference advantage, they could still win the championship for the first time since 1994 even if they lose.
