State secondary schools must purchase 213,585 books by 2008 to increase their stock to 292,590 which would average to 14 books per student, the Schools Library Service of the Education Division said.

The total book stock in state secondary schools this year is 180,178 of which only 73,276 are useful. This was an average of 3.5 books per students.

The number of internet connections will also have to increase from zero to 38.

A one-day seminar - "Down to Basics - Up to Standard" - will be held for state and non-state school librarians by the Schools Library Services and the Malta School Library Association at Maria Assumpta Girls Secondary School, Hamrun, on October 27 - International School Library Day.
