Warning shots fired in attempted break-in

The police had to fire warning shots in Naxxar yesterday when two young men where caught red-handed attempting to break into a residence in Triq San Gorg.

The shots were fired when one of the men rushed off the scene. He was arrested soon after.

The police were informed about the attempted robbery at 1.15 p.m. when a 15-year-old, quick-witted girl who was inside the house at the time phoned them up when she heard the door being tampered with.

The men have been remanded in custody.

Later on in the afternoon, at about 3.30 the police received a report that somebody was attempting to break into the Invicta showroom in Ponsonby Street, Mosta.

When the police arrived on site, however, the would-be robbers had fled. The police noticed that one of the showroom's windows was smashed and a transit van apparently abandoned nearby had been reported stolen.
