WasteServ Malta Ltd yesterday filed a counter protest in the First Hall of the Civil Court in reply to a protest filed against it and against the Malta Environment and Planning Authority by three local councils.
Zejtun, Zabbar and Marsascala local councils together with seven voluntary organisations forming the Kumitat Kontra l-Impjant ghar-Riciklagg Kif Propost (Anti-Recycling Plant Proposed Changes Committee) had filed a protest complaining of an application to demolish the existing recycling plant in Marsascala in order to construct four new structures.
The committee claimed that the approval of the application would have serious repercussions on the population in the vicinity of the plant. WasteServ denied the allegations contained in the judicial protest and insisted that all precautions would be taken. It also disagreed that the proposed plant would be a health hazard or would negatively affect the value of properties in the area.
The new plant would occupy the same footprint as the existing plant. Furthermore, all processing of waste would take place indoors and not in the open as was the case at present. The company added that the new development proposed the elimination of gases in the vicinity.
WasteServ said it planned to fully respect the policies contained in the national structure plan for the area, adding that the committee's claims were unfounded at law.
Dr Victor Scerri signed the counter protest.
