'Keep doors shut' warning after fire at Wasteserv plant in Magħtab

'People and plant are safe' - Wastserv spokesperson

Residents near the scene of a fire at the Wasteserv plant in Magħtab have been told to keep their doors and windows shut.

The advice from the Civil Protection Department applies to people living in the Bugibba, St Paul’s Bay, Salini, and Qawra areas affected by smoke from the industrial fire. 

Firefighters remain on site.

In a statement, the CPD said the situation "is being monitored closely by the relevant authorities".

The fire started shortly after 11.35am on Wednesday at the waste processing plant.

A spokesperson for Wasteserv said the fire was in a "contained area" and that the "people and plant are safe".

Authorities have not given any details on the cause of the fire. 

In a Facebook post, PN leader Alex Borg expressed his solidarity with CPD members and emergency services tackling the blaze.
