Watch: ‘Fish Fridays’ to visit schools weekly in nationwide nutrition drive

Roaming event will offer fish tastings for students and parents as part of efforts to tackle childhood obesity

The Parliamentary Secretary for Fisheries has clarified how the Fish Fridays initiative announced in the 2026 Budget will work, explaining that it will be a roaming event visiting one school at a time.

Rather than adding fish on the menu in school canteens, Fish Fridays will take the form of an event that will give children the opportunity to taste different types of fish cooked in varied ways.

The event will be open not only to the students but to their parents too. They will be able to meet chefs to discuss how best to cook fish and a book with easy local recipes will be distributed.

In a Facebook reel, Alicia Bugeja Said explained that the initiative is part of a drive to curb obesity in primary school children and educate them on the importance of eating a nutritious, balanced diet.

She said that a report drawn up by the superintendence of public health revealed that 40 per cent of primary school children are obese.

The reel, launched on Thursday, starts with a young girl who introduces herself as Scarlett. The sixth-grader says she had never heard of Fish Fridays and imagined it to be some kind of a van that distributes fish to every classroom.

“Yes I like fish,” she tells an interviewer off-camera. “I would be interested in learning more about fish”.

Borg Said said Fish Fridays will visit a different school every week in a nationwide tour and urged parents to attend the event when it comes to their children’s school.

She did not specify exactly when Fish Fridays will begin and in which school.
