Last-gasp controversial penalty leaves Spartans eliminated from UEFA Conference League
Ħamrun Spartans were eliminated from the UEFA Conference League in unbelievable fashion on Thursday night, conceding a 94th-minute penalty after their captain picked up the ball inside the penalty area.
The resulting goal gave Faroese side NSÍ Runavík a 2-1 lead and allowed them to go through to the next round with a 3-2 aggregate victory.
The match was evenly matched at 1-1 and poised for extra time when the shock incident occurred.
Ħamrun captain Emerson Marcelina picked up the ball inside the penalty area, thinking the ball had gone out for a goal kick. The referee and assistant referee thought otherwise.
