Watch: Times of Malta debates future of the media in 90th anniversary event

President, prime minister among speakers at event

As Times of Malta marks its 90th anniversary, a special event celebrated its legacy and put journalism in the spotlight.

A business breakfast at The Phoenicia Hotel gathered dignitaries, former editors and media players.

The event featured remarks by President Myriam Spiteri Debono, Prime Minister Robert Abela, PN deputy leader Alex Perici Calascione and Times of Malta editor-in-chief Herman Grech.

The discussion examined the challenges facing independent journalism at a time of disinformation, political polarisation, and pressure on media organisations.

Assistant editor Mark Laurence Zammit moderated a panel discussion: ‘Can journalism survive the attack on the truth?’ The panel will feature Alan Hunter (former head of digital – Times of London), Bertrand Borg (Times of Malta online editor), Ariadne Massa (former Times of Malta news editor and media strategist) and Kurt Farrugia (former government head of communications).

Pete Buttigieg, former US secretary of transportation, who has strong family ties to Malta, also gave a specially recorded address.

The event was sponsored by Malta International Airport, Forvis Mazars, Citadel Insurance, Computime, Chemimart, OHSA, eCabs, Alberta, Heritage Malta and The Phoenicia Malta.
