An underground system would not be susceptible to traffic jams and that reliability – along with having a service every six minutes – would be enough to coax half the drivers to leave their cars behind, according to architect Konrad Xuereb.

He argues that with the rising population, something has to be done to reduce the number of cars on the road – and that the sooner work starts on a metro, the better.
