Who was Daphne Caruana Galizia and how has Malta changed in the 12 months since her murder?

Times of Malta asked Lizzie Elridge, a writer and member of activist group Occupy Justice, and former MP Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando, who was a frequent target of the late journalist’s controversial blog, for their views.

A hard-nosed investigative journalist? A glorified gossip monger? The two had a different take on the late Ms Caruana Galizia.

Opinion was also split on the impact her horrific murder had on the island.

To Ms Elridge activist/blogger Manuel Delia had said it best in The Sunday Times of Malta when he wrote “A year ago we lived in a country where a journalist was unbearably harassed. Now we live in a country where a journalist has been killed.”

In Ms Eldridge's view, impunity for her murder and a feeling of lawlessness has taken over the country - and it's only gotten worse without Ms Caruana Galizia around. 

"It's become almost good if you're corrupt," she says. 

But to Dr Pullicino Orlando, the most significant effect of Ms Caruana Galizia’s death was its bearing on the Nationalist Party, contributing significantly to what he believes is a “split” between two key factions. 

"To put it bluntly," he says, "very few people mourn her".
