Watch: Thief caught on camera smashing cab window and stealing cash

A cab owner has been unable to work for two days after his car was broken into in a brazen daylight robbery which was caught on video.

The driver, who asked not to be named, said the thief made off with around €70 to €100 in cash which was in the car.

CCTV footage obtained by Times of Malta shows a person wearing a hooded jacket, holding a red object in his hand and covering his face with his other hand, approaching the vehicle which was parked on Triq is-Sejjieh in Swieqi on Sunday at around 3.25pm.

The person hovers by the car for a couple of seconds then smashes the front window on the right side of the car. The vehicle’s dashcam records the person leaning through the broken window, with his feet dangling in the air, allegedly taking the cash before running away.

The cab owner filed a police report at St Julian’s police station soon after.

Speaking to Times of Malta, the driver said the repairs to his window cost around €250 and he has been unable to work for the past two days while the repairs are underway.

He added that the garage told him "around four or five" other vehicles had suffered similar damages in recent days.

He speculated that his vehicle might have been targeted due to being a cab, with drivers frequently handling cash, noting other nearby vehicles, including a Maserati, had been parked close to his and not been broken into.

The cab driver said he has not received any updates from the police.

Questions have been sent to the police.
