Waterloo in London is still easily the UK’s busiest train station despite a dip in numbers last year, it was announced.

A total of just under 86.4 million passengers used Waterloo in 2009/10 (April 2009 to March 2010), figures from the Office of Rail Regulation showed.

This was a two per cent drop on Waterloo’s 2008/09 total, but the south London station was still some way ahead of second-busiest UK station – Victoria in London – which handled just over 70 million passengers in 2009/10.

London terminii occupied eight of the top 10 places in the busiest-station table, with the only non-capital stations being Birmingham New Street and Glasgow Central.

Although staying in third place, London’s Liverpool Street sta-tion handled six per cent fewer passengers (just under 51.6 million) in 2009/10.

The biggest rise in passenger numbers among the top 10 was at London’s Euston station which handled nine per cent more passengers (just over 30 million) in 2009/10 than in 2008/09.

For stations outside London, there were 10 per cent increases in 2009/10 at Edinburgh (up to 19.3 million), Glasgow Queen Street (19.2 million) and Gatwick Airport (12.8 million).
